I've seen that, but never seen it done. It is easy enough to slip the
belt off, and remove the bearing caps and cam. Just be methodical and
clean. It requires strong fingers and diligence to slip the belt off.
Set engine #1 cyl to TDC. With #1 TDC checking with blunt rod or
screwdriver thru no. 1 spark plug hole - Make sure flywheel mark and
cam mark coincide with mark on back of cam sprocket(dot lines up with
head gasket). It would be nice if harmonic balancer mark lines up too,
but these can and do slip.
Note/mark location of distributor rotor - it will turn a little as you
remove the cam. Oh, I may be jumping ahead a little here - with great
care, the belt can be slipped off the sprocket. You may haswever need
to loosten water pump/tensioner.
Optionally, you can remove the cam sprocket, but probably not necessary
if you aren't upgrading the cam.
Um, you were going to change the timing belt and water pump at this
point, no? Not a bad idea, to roll all of these jobs together.
Back off nuts on cam bearings a little at a time to release pressure
gradually and uniformly on the cam.
Cam can be manipulated at this point so lifters can be replaced. Don't
forget the Moly lube on the lobes.
OK, this is not standard procedure, and I may have missed a step or 2,
but that is basically what I'd do/have done. Again, not necessary to
do water pump, timing belt, etc., but if it is near time, then it is a
case of "while I'm at it." Good time to put in that 272 cam!
Hope this helps.

[Bentley says rotate the camshaft so the lobes point upwards and then
thelifter can be removed. Somehow, I have doubts as there seems to be
verylittle space under the cam. Has anyone replaced the lifters without
removing the camshaft? If so, can you please offer some guidance?
The engine is a 5-cyl NG.
Thanks.
