Oh, let me tell you, ATF works! To well, actually.

I had a 92 Audi 100 2.8q Avant with 195.000 kms on the meter. This
engine had a lot of black goop in the oil pan, in fact, the oil was
nothing but black tar! I dropped in a good slump of ATF (about 1 or 2
cups) and let it run for 5 minutes, and this washed out all the black
goop. It actually washed out so much that any worn bearing or piston
ring tolerance was now too big, so this engine used 4-5 liters of oil
per 1000 kms. It was one of the biggest mistakes I ever did, luckily I
sold the car to an unsupecting buyer, whom I never heard from since...
