I have removed 4 of them, and every time the check valve came loose before
the retaining cap would come loose. I ground a 17mm wrench to be thin enough
to slide between the electrical connections. One pump was so tight it broke
the wrench and I had to grind down another wrench. It's a terrible design. IF
the cap comes loose, it is then easy to loosen the valve with a 17mm deep
well socket. A crow foot wrench might hold it as well, but I have yet to try
it.
