Hey Rich,
I am far from an expert on auto repair, but the front axel on the 4kq is
really not that bad, I have it down to about 30minutes; but the first time
was another story.
As always the proper tools are needed, and I am one that can usually fix
anything with a screwdriver and an hammer.
First before you jack up the car I highly recommend breaking the axel (hub)
nut loose, as odd it sounds I always forget this step and then job becomes a
P.I.T.A. I believe the nut is a 30mm.
Yea, a hub puller is nice to have but removing the lower wishbone is more
important. Allows you to swing the strut assembly out of the way. Once you
have disconnected the lower (wishbone) and the bottom of the assembly is
free to move, you can always screw the axel (hub) nut back on 5-6 threads
and with a little persuasion give it a wack with a hammer to so you can
loosen the spline from the hub assembly. You should be good to go.
Oh yea, also make sure you have allot of long extensions to remove the 8
bolts that hold the axel to the drive flange on the trans.. Need to get the
12pt tool (10 mm); the 8 pt torxs doesn't work and you really don't want to
strip out those little teeth on the bolts .. Best of luck..

Subject: 4kq axle replacement
Hi.
I'm a novice mechanic and am considering replacing the front pass axle on my
86 4kcsq. Are there any special tools required or special procedures I
should know about. My Haynes manual says to use a "hub puller" and
something about disconnecting the front suspension from the wishbone.
Thanks in advance for your advice.
