Ben,
Take your shift knob off and sand it down well.  Then take some medium to dark stain, coat it a few times, let it dry, and polyurethane the hell out of it.
Looks really really nice that way.
I did it to mine.  Probably the nicest looking part on the car right now.
Would really make that shot of the console look nice.
