Scott,
The answer is "Yes and no". Some chips are modified in a way where the
stock tension of the spring is sufficient, but in some other cases, it can
be necessary to tighten it down a bit (always in 1/4 of turn steps) in
order to reach the programmed boost values. Now for an RS2 upgrade, a
stiffer spring is necessary as the WGFV can't open more than 100% duty
cycle and in order to get 1.3 Bar at 2800 RPM, a setting of 92% is already
necessary with a stock spring. On a stock K24, a stiffer spring isn't
always necessary but it helps with spool-up at much lower RPM than a stock
spring and also reduces lag dramatically. I know most people think a K24
can't be laggy, well, after you've tried a K24 with a stiffer spring (and a
boost chip with the WGFV duty cycle programmed accordingly of course)
you'll say that a K24 on a stock spring IS laggy! BTDT, I used to think
like many and from the day I've tested a stiffer spring (20% more than
stock, 1.55 Bar absolute boost with WGFV unplugged, ie 7 psi boost), I've
never wanted to switch back to the stock unit, except for chip development
purposes of course, as not everyone might agree with my preferences...
