clutch pedal to the floor

I've had this happen to me twice, on two different Audis. The first
was an '89 200Q, and it needed both the master and slave cylinders
replaced. The other one was an '87 4000 (non-Q) I adjusted the
clucth cable and it worked fine again....for a couple of days. So, I
figured the clutch or throwout bearing was bad, so I pulled the
transmission. No, they were both in good shape. After a little more
investigation and a bit of luck, I found the problem. The shaft that
operates the throwout bearing had an arm on the end which connects it
to the clutch cable. The shaft is splined, and the arm clamps to
these splines, only on mine, the inside of the arm had worn so it did
not fit the splines tightly, and would rotate on the shaft. A few
seconds with a mig welder and I was on the road again. Now, I have a
100 auto, so no more clutch problems, but probably in need of a fluid
change. Speaking of which, is this a very difficult procedure? I
haven't seen a fill tube or trans dipstick uner the hood yet, but I
did see a removeable pan on the underside which is likely hiding the
filter.
