What Next - No Start

OK, here's the story.

After changing the cap/rotor/wires on 80q, the car would not start.
Ignition seems to fire and it engine even turned over a few times but would
not start. Checked cnad re-checked to make sure wires are in correct order
(12453 clockwise from smallest stub first). Using meter, checked hall
sender, coil and associated harnesses as in Bentley. Correct voltages
appear.

Finally took it to a shop. Mechanic thinks might have jumped a tooth or two
on the timing belt. Said he needed to take the nose off the front ($179)
and then check for valve damage ($$$) etc. Basically, said he didn't have
much of an idea. Told him to stop right there and had it towed back. I
find it hard to believe that this might have happened since it was running
fine before the cap/rotor change.

I haven't checked spark yet since I'm not sure how this is done. Any ideas?
Could the actual distributor be bad and how do you pull this and can I
rebuild it?

I'm thinking if this might take me too long I might donate the car. Seems a
shame since it only has 150K on clock.

Any ideas appreciated.

Thank you all.
