Dave,
Sorry that my posting seemed like chiding - I _DO_ appreciate a well tuned
car - mentioning the "sound" brought to mind the Dodge Neon I see/hear drive
by my place occasionally - that's just plain sad. I remember the sound of
the tuned S4 slicing through the autocross course at Mosport during the
quattro Challenge a couple of years ago - one of Audi's volunteer track
workers asked me "What's wrong with that car?" - "_NOTHING_" I responded.
The most memorable sound, though, was the S8 being tossed around the track -
that was _SWEET_.
The airhorn comment was made with tongue firmly planted in cheek - I think
what they've done to eliminate the CIS is amazing.
There are a number of bypass valve manufacturers out there - the OEM for
Audi/Saab/etc. is Bosch, but there are aftermarket companies like Forge
Motorsports, or Bailey - search for DV or "Diverter Valve" on the net and
you'll find them (either diaphragm or piston types). I got a Bosch valve
(diaphragm type) for my initial install from the local Saab dealer for less
than half what the local Audi dealer wanted for one. After the install,
I'll watching eBay (and searching the local wrecking yards) for a Forge
valve.

1987 5kTQ - a "Money Pit" like yours.....what a coincidence....NOT.
1980 5k - used to be considered a "Money Pit" until I got the '87 (it raised
the bar...and dropped it squarely on my wallet)
1962 and '64 Auto Union DKW Junior deLuxes - gobbling up whatever money
doesn't get swallowed by the "Pits" above.
