I'll chime in here as well. I find my car (93 100s, with a 5sp) to be
plenty fast. It's damn quick on the highway and gets moving pretty quick off
the line as well with some clutch manipulation. It's definitely geared tall
but that engine is anything but weak. In fact, it was pulling like a freight
train today, 90mph+, up a long mountain incline in 5th gear with three
people onboard and a full tank of gas. Having previously owned an 86
5kcst(albeit an auto), I will say that this car is definitely faster, even
on the highway. A 20v it's not, but so many people call 12v cars slow and I
think this is only true for autobox and autobox+quattro models.
