Any LED rated for 12v will have a built-in resistor- most LEDs are
rated for no more than a few volts tops, so a 12v rating will be a
dead giveaway.

Note that another option is installing a bulb in the dash for the
check engine light- it's in the same small panel above the 3 gauges
as the door and airbag lights. Getting the dash out to do so,
however, is a royal pain in the ass :-)
