Middle exhaust silencer

Hi,
I've got some BIG RUSTY PROBLEM with my "new" old Quattro Coupe.
Middle Muffler is completely shot so I need to replace it.
My question is - Is it possible not to change it with another midd muffler, but change it with straight 2.5" or 3" pipe?
If it is possible how do you think? Can I expect car noise remains unchanged or at least little bit louder?
