blower/core R&R play by play

Well, it's not a real play by play, but I MUST say that this was one
of the easier jobs I've had to do on a type 44. Since the upper end
rebuild I did during CHristmas, I think I could do anything.

My fear of doing a heater core (and blower)job stems from when I was
~10. We had an '83 5000. We took it to a shop that spent half a day
working on it. Lots of obscene words I never heard before were
used :) Anyhow, the guy put it back together, but it didn't work
right. I think the outer vents didn't work, or something. That's
where my fear started and was supported by the list. I must say this
was an easy job and I can probably do it in under 1 3/4 hours next
time. The first time on sat took me ~4 hours because I took my time,
cleaned the grunge out of the box, etc. I put it back together and
found the dash vents weren't working. So, I pulled it out on sunday
morning at 11:40 and had it back by 1. I left off the black vacuum
line. I found that I didn't really need to disassemble too much of
the interior. I just needed access to the 2 screws that hold on the
floor vents. The vacuum lines are self explanatory, except the black
one. It connects to the black line underneath the hood. I didn't see
it the first time, so I hooked it up to the unused port of the servo.
No dash vents. Pulled it all out again, disassembled the box to make
sure all of the flaps were moving right. Found the missing line and
Voila! I used permatex non hardening sealer over the old sealer. Held
pretty tightly the morning after. I also lightly lubed the pivots
with super lube. Seems to have made a difference.

Oddly enough, the reassembly of the box was not bad. I didn't waste
any time bothering with all of these methods to align the flaps. I
reassembled the box from one end to another, getting the flaps in the
pivot holes as I went along. I clipped the box along the way. A big
help was having hand that could fit in through the large bottom vent.
I stuck my hands in there and aligned the flaps (esp the center small
one).

Much thanks to Chris Millers site. It was a help to see those
diagrams in there.
