Remember my car when you first rode in it? Those were
broken rings! Like Nate said, pull off the crankcase
breather hose and see if it's spewing out fumes and
oil. If it's not, swap that turbo out. If it is and
you find low compression on any cylinders, you can do
the rings without pulling the motor as you described.
If you're still on your original clutch though, and
you feel like replacing seals and stuff, it may be a
good idea just to yank it out and give it the once
over.
