offtopic - cheap used car wanted

A friend of ours was in a bad car accident, and her parents are up from
Florida to be with her.
It looks like this is going to be a long process, and although they got
a good deal on a rental car, it's still $800/mo, and I believe it's a
burden for them.

My goal is to find a cheap yet reliable 4 door automatic, ideally in the
sub-$1000 range, buy it and let them them use it.  I'll foot the
insurance/registration and repairs too, and when they are done I'll sell
or donate it.

If you have something like this, preferably close to NYC as I won't have
time to travel, please let me know.  Thanks.
