Most big-name antifreeze companies are now producing lower-phosphate or
phosphate-free antifreeze solutions that are just fine in any car,
especially if you replace it every 2 years or less. The Europeans did kind
of lead the way, and the VW/Audi factory antifreezes of any particular
vintage are good, if expensive, examples. The same is true of gearbox oils.
People who dutifully changed their original synthetic VW/Audi manual tranny
fluid with readily available standard 80/90 gear lube at 60K in the 1980's
and 90's actually did their cars a dis-service.
