According to my quick skim of the web site he mentioned, it's not
because it's higher octane (which just means it's less explosive, I
guess), it's because toluene has a higher energy density than gasoline.
More boom in the gallon, so more miles. Apparently, a lot more boom.
If the toluene also meant less time in a poorer performing part of the
"ignition map," that might also affect economy as well as performance.
