Shoot! I had no idea they were in the price-park of the Michelins.
To be clear, I'm not competitive. I enjoy running on street tires
(aside from the sacrifice in straight-line braking) -- they are much more
fun and slide nicely, and if it rains you can still get
traction. However, they don't last an outing! So yes, I'm more interested
in a compromise tire, one with longevity. And I will also not dodge the
suggestion that an R compound gives me more confidence. I understand
the driver is the important element in the pair "car + driver" (meaning,
don't put track tires on a car with a lousy driver in an effort to make
him better; train him to drive better first). However, the physical layout
of SIR/(now PR) makes it pretty much totally unforgiving in comparison to
our other venue Bremerton. I do believe that an R compound tire in this
particular environment gives the driver one more element of control and
that adds up to increased safety. After reading a couple of the posts I do
feel compelled to explain this.
