There are a few hundred overgrown frat boys around here who think that
it's cool to make lots of noise and piss people off with their
aftermarket exhausts. Sure, it's extremely cool, if by cool you mean
inconsiderate. If you live in a vacuum with no-one (and nothing that
doesn't like loud noises) around, you can make your car as loud as you
like. But mufflers exist to make the sound of a few thousand
explosions per car per second manageable. Laws are there for one
reason: so that inconsiderate people don't do too much harm. If you
need to watch out for cops, then you're _way_ too loud. Some day I'd
like to wander around town here and fill all the "upgraded" exhausts
with cement. I am not alone.
Why don't you try asking random people if they'd prefer for your car
to make more noise? Since it benefits no-one but you, may I suggest a
waveform generator with a sensor on your throttle and output to your
stereo?
I like fast cars as much as anyone on this list (well, maybe not
_anyone_ ;) But some upgrades are sociopathic.
