Air flow sensor

Hi all,
I am concerned about whether my air flow sensor on my '89 200qta (1B
engine, UK car - no emmision controls) is functioning properly. On my old
'86 100qa (normally aspirated) the air flow sensor plate could be lifted up
and dropped down with no resistence and it seemed that the only thing
keeping the plate down was gravity. On my 200qta, the air flow sensor plate
seems to be sprung down. I find it difficult to believe that the air flow
can act against this spring properly in order to set the correct fuel
pressure in the distributor. The pressure to raise the plate is uniform and
it drops quickly back down again with no resistence at all. If I pump the
plate up and down quickly many times, sometimes I can feel a little extra
resistence on the downward stroke. This is all with the engine not running.
So, is this normal for this engine or should the airflow plate feel like
it's only held down with gravity, like on my 100qa?
Cheers, Mike.
