Help my seat broke in half

The passenger seat backrest in my 87 4kq is broken in two. Has anyone ever
seen this sort of thing before? I got enough of the cover off to see that
the sheet metal frame has broken more or less cleanly a couple of inches
from the top on both sides. I have no idea how this happened, I can think
of some interesting potential explanations but unfortunately none of them
are true.

Does anyone have a spare passenger seat in the Seattle area? The interior
is the black quattro scrip but I suppose I can swap the covers on the back
rest. For that matter does anyone know of a junkyard around here that
might have a seat. I would like to use this car to drive a couple of other
people across the state tomorrow but it is looking like I might be taking
a different car.
