Weird Audi electrics

Mike,
Be VERY! concerned. It could be your ignition switch. It happened to my
wife when she was driving our 95 90Q, but did not shut the car off and
restart it. The starter remained engaged, essentially frying it by keeping
it engaged with the flywheel while driving. Then the car overheated in
traffic because the radiator fans would not run. The old style ignition
switch housing is of poor design quality. It can crack, and then the return
spring will fail to return the switch from the "Start" to the "Run"
position. The starter remains engaged and no power gets to your auxiliaries
(they are momentarily shut off to send max power to the starter when you
turn the key). I would schedule the switch for replacement. Make sure that
the key returns to the run position after starting until you replace it.
The switch is about $30 as I recall.
Regards,
Tim Crift

Subject: Weird Audi electrics
I was running errands in my 1995 90 Sport Quattro yesterday and everything
seemed normal -- car started up fine, ran great, etc. All seemed well until
I tried to put down the window; nothing. Tried other windows; nothing. Tried
everything electrical in the car and NOTHING worked, except for the stereo.
I pulled over, restarted the car, and everything has been fine since.
Should I be concerned, or file this under the weird things Audis
periodically do?
Thanks,
Mike McLaughlin
