I have a '91 Coupe Quattro with the normally aspirated 20V engine. It has
65,000 miles on Mobil 1 15W50.
The car had its timing belt and a major service done to it today and the shop
called me and told me that my lower rod bearings were noisy and that they
needed replacement. He also told me that if this did not get done, I am
looking at a bigger job down the line and that replacing them now can prevent
a larger job down the line.
What would cause the rod bearings to fail so prematurely and how is their
failure diagnosed? Is this common on the 20V engine?
If you opt to not get it done what're the consequences?
Thanks for your help.
Chris
