Wheels generally have an inside bearing and an outside bearing. (And each
of those bearings has an inner and an outer race, we're talking bearings,
not races.) Even the front bearings on the quattros (at least the type 44s)
have an inside and an outside bearing, the inner races are separate, while
the outer is one big piece - it's a two in one sort of thing.

Depending on if the inner bearing or the outer bearing is bad, the noise
will change on "loading" or "unloading" a single wheel. Each bearing gets
tighter by loading from the opposite direction. They usually make more
noise when they get tighter.

I have found it very difficult to tell which side of the car has a bad
bearing by listening to the noise while driving.

By the time bearings make noise, you can usually tell what is bad by the
play in the bearing. I usually take off the tire and rim, and load the
bearings by hand to sense where the play might be.
