were, I'd suggest that the heat shield was missing from the solenoid.  If
you do replace the starter, be sure to get a new heat shield ... the
replacement most likely will not have one, and since you have a turbo you
may find that you have a hot start problem in a couple years without it ...

One final note ... if you appear to have a marginal charging situation as
well, you might want to test to see if the splice in the +12 or the ground
braid at the left engine mount have gone bad.  These problems can reduce the
voltage available at the starter ...
