spread the fingers, pulling towards you until you've got relatively
good grip on one of the (three) prongs sticking up from the filter.

Then you kind of 'walk' the thing up the filler tube by seesawing it
from side to side while applying upward drag.  Once you have an inch or
two sticking out of the top, grab it and pull upwards.  It slides
smoothly and then suddenly stops.  Just pull harder - nothing will
break.  Takes guts.

The same going back in - it will slide so far and then just stop.
Slap it down with the flat of your hand.
