I'd just got some new Bridgestone RE71's put on my 84 CGT, and had got about
200m down the road when there was a clunk and the car's right rear side
lowered noticeably... I quickly pulled over and saw my wheel, with brand new
tyre, racing down the road...
it crossed the road, jumped the curb and carried on... it kept on through
the set of traffic lights, now with me in hot pursuit... and planted itself
firmly into the drivers side door of a car turning through the intersection,
this bounced it back allowing me to catch it...

The tyre had actually traveled twice as far from the tyre shop as my car
had..!
I headed back to the car picking up wheel bolts from the gutter as i went...

Turns out that my Audi had suffered serious abuse from the previous owner,
and one strut had been replaced, this one had studs and lugnuts instead of
bolts, and more importantly had a spacer plate behind it...
The errr... 'monkey' (polite as i can manage) who did the tyres failed to
notice, and put the spaced wheel back on a different corner.
He also failed to realise that the 2-3 turns he put on the bolts would not
hold a wheel on...
the bolts stripped the thread out of the drum and away she went...

Wanting my car fixed right away, rather than having them send it off to a
garage the following week, I ended up fitting helicoils to my brake drum to
reattach the wheel...
Took me most of the day to get it back on the road...

Their insurance covered the dented door on the other car...
This and a few other experiences have resulted in me being very wary of
allowing anyone else to touch my car...

Bob: Hope you don't have any insurance troubles...

Today I was sitting in my 4KQ when a bird decided to drop it's precious
material all over my new wax job!
