NF/NG tuning ideas?

Hello list,
With my sister going off to college in a few weeks and not taking her car (1988 VW Quantum Syncro) I am thinking of fixing it up for her this year. Next year she is going to take it with her. The first thing I want to do is replace the long block. The NF is the one I want right, it has the injector holes in the head?
The NF starts out with 10:1 compression, I know it runs a knock sensing ignition but how much initial advance does it have, or how much would be safe to run with 91-92 octane? The NF/NG engines have an exhaust manifold/downpipe with dual outlets. The Quantum Syncro and 4kq have the 3 outlet header downpipe. Is the 3 outlet one worth any power over the 2 outlet one? Do any of the 5 cylinder intake manifolds flow any better than others? I would want to put on the best flowing one even if its not worth much gain. How about porting the head? Someone told me once that it is a lot easier to make them flow less than more. I don't have any flow bench but I could make one and I could test out different things, heads are cheap to me. I am hoping to get 150-160hp with a K&N bigger throttle body (if any gain is to be had) better flowing intake manifold (if there is one) ported head and a cam. The exhaust is already 2.25" which is all I want to keep some torque. What cams are recommended? I don't want to spend 500 bucks, that is rediculous. I would just put together a turbo kit for it like I did to mine, cheap and easy but I've already done that once and my sister says I can't go doing serious things to it (it has to look stock).
Thanks for any help,
Mike
