On my '93 90 (now departed) I had the pleasure of blowing out both the
left and right cats. I replaced the left pretty quickly when it started
rattling (to my dismay at about 52k miles, 2k past the Federal mandated
warantee period).

About a year ago the right started to go, and I just ignored it because
we had just had a baby and I didn't want to deal with the downtime. I
took it to my tech last spring (so about 4-6 months later) and after
torching the old one off, we found it to be empty.

The ceramic core had broken up and most of it was hopelessly lodged in
the nether regions of the exhaust and the rear mufflers. Major
backpressure.

So I drove it about another month and then traded it on a 2001 S4 Avant
:-).

(BTW, I've still got that replacement right-side cat which I bought from
Discount Converters. If you're interested contact me off-list.)
