Thanks for the reply.  Yes, it only smokes when starting the engine from
cold.  If the engine is warmed up, it starts cleanly without smoking.

The worn valve seats/piston rings is just my theory, although I can't
think of anything else that would cause such symptoms.  Especially since
the dealer said that the problem would be "labor intensive" to repair,
which rings and valve seats always are.
