Sounds like you simply have a flaky timing reference sensor. They can be
temp sensitive when they get old/worn out. Even if the car isn't
starting you should never see that error code, unless the sensor is
failing, or the wiring to it is damaged somehow. Those sensors (timing
reference and engine speed sensors) are what tell the ECU that the
engine is actually turning over, and to start the fuel pump. Thats why
when everything starts to magically work again you can hear the fuel
pump buzzing away.
They don't come very cheap new (looks like ~$110 from thepartsbin.com),
so you may want to gamble to test it out and grab one out of a junk yard
or something. The two sensors are interchangeable (engine speed and
timing reference).
