4kq- true rear diff capacity?

   I refreshed the gear lube in the rear diff of my '87 4kq recently.  I 
believe bently says it'll take almost 3 quarts, but after draining it (car 
level on jackstands) I could only put in about 1 qt before it came out the 
fill hole.  I even waited a day and tried to add more but was unsuccessful.

  Is bently wrong, or is something strange going on?
