Tom,
I made my own version of a 2084 crank locking tool last weekend when I
changed the timing belt on my 1991 200q 20v Avant.
I bought a 6" (could have been 4") piece of square 2x2 tubing at a local
welding shop. Next I cut 1.5" off one side at one end with my jig saw to
make a notch and used a hand grinder to take a little material off each of
the 4 corners so it fit nicely inside the pulley. I held this with a 14"
pipe wrench and it worked extremely well.
See http://home1.gte.net/pdooley/auditool.html for something similar to
what I made, but IMO you do not need the welded handle. The 14" pipe wrench
works very well. It is the same 14" pipe wrench I use for my front strut
caps : - )
Oh, and I cut the entire width for the notch because I liked the way the
edge of the tubing fit against the tab in the crank pulley better with the
entire side removed than what you see in the picture on the site I
reference above.
Where do you live? How soon do you need one? I could make you one or loan
you mine.
I was actually considering doing a small production run of 2084
substitutes, but I will not have the time to make a very big run for
several months. Is there enough demand for these to justify my time making
some?
