Check out the above link for specs on the various Optima battery models,
incl the orange top.
I have an optima battery in my garage now along with a type 44 Audi, rear
seat and battery removed... hasn't been installed yet. This battery is the
model 34/74 ... the model with both types of battery posts... I think they
consider it a universal fit and in my experience it is the model most
widely available.
Here's what I see re: the install...
The battery dimensions are nearly identical to OEM except for the posts.
They projecting above the top of the battery about 3/4 inch (2 cm) taller
than OEM, are set back further from the edge of the battery (2.5 vs 1.5
inches) and are on opposite sides of the battery.
Option #1
The battery fits when laid on it's side with the posts pointing toward the
rear, and the GM style fittings on top, negative post toward the driver's
side... no clearance problems anywhere incl the seat. The GM posts have a
screwed in plastic plug which will be left in place to keep things safe.
The negative cable is too short by about three inches. It appears that a
longer cable is mandatory ... looks like 12 inches would be needed.
Oriented as described, the negative post is on the same side as the OEM
battery.
The hold-down bracket won't work so you probably want to devise another
method of securing it. I can see a number of possibilities involving use
of a metal strap, bolts, etc. I suppose if the seat is held down with
screws the battery would be secure in the event of a roll-over, etc, but I
would probably devise a real hold-down of some kind.
Option #2
Stand the battery upright ... posts toward the front of the car and
pointing upward, negative toward drivers side. The posts are about 3/4
inches (2 cm) taller than the OEM battery but appear to have plenty of
clearance under the seat. Things are a bit close toward the front... but
this area of the seat has less flex so concern re: taller posts is reduced.
The installer would need to be sure the cable clamps would not come in
contact with the metal frame toward the front, and protect the top of the
posts with a cover. I don't see a real problem with either of these
clearance issues.
Option #3
Same as #2 but with posts toward the rear and pointing up. This would
require a longer negative cable, but the positive cable would reach.
Option #4
Orange top ... posts toward the rear and pointing up ... This would work
with OEM cables and hold down clamp, but I see no advantage over #2.
Having the taller posts farther toward the rear would place them closer to
underside of the seat in an area with more flex.
Option #2 looks like the one I'll use. I don't see any reason to hunt for
an orange top.
