Mine definately has a cable going from the tranny to the speedo, It also
has a 2 wire connector which I think is the speed sensor for the cruise
control, but I am 100% sure mine is cable driven

I am 100% sure it isn't a cable problem since it is driven
electronically. (At
least my 87 is and I am 99% sure your 86 is the same) probably best
thing to do
is clean the contacts on the back of the speedo (a two wire plug) and
look for
broken wires etc. also check out the sender on the tranny and the wires
to the
IC. (Do you have Bentley yet? if not it is now time) The manual isn't
all that
expensive and is the only way to work on these cars.

Good luck

Luke
