'90 80 high idle?

Resending- my first posting prompted an unsubscription and I don't think
the post made it to the list...


Hi all,

Recently, my 1990 Audi 80 2.0E (3A engine) has started idling at 1600-1800
rpm intermittently. Idle doesn't come down by revving it and letting it go,
nor by letting the clutch in. The only way to bring idle down seems to be
to do a Bill Gates (shutdown and restart). Any ideas where to look? The
idle doesn't fluctuate, so it's probably not the ISV.
Also, in the warm-up stage and when it's warm outside (we've had a good
summer) it seems to die sometimes, but will restart immediately and run
fine afterwards. Maybe the symptoms are related?
