Cutoff at 6k rpm

I had the same problem on my '95 S6 and it was driving me crazy trying to
track down the problem. The long and the short of it is that you are
actually hitting the 7200 rpm redline and the ignition cut-off is kicking
in. The tachometer is just reading low by approximately 17%, which is
coincidently the difference between 6 cyls and 5 cyls. This is now the 5th
S6 that I have heard of having this problem, and it only affects the '95-'97
S6 with the digital odometer as far as I can tell.
Fortunately Paul Gailus determined that the fix is easy, if you have access
to a VAG-COM. The instrument cluster is most likely coded for a 6 cylinder
engine, and since it is only receiving 5 pulses per revolution, it will read
low. Here is a link to the post that Paul sent on how to fix it with
VAG-COM:

If you don't have access to a VAG-COM the dealer will obviously be able to
reset it for you as well, but I wouldn't be surprised if they want to charge
you for a minimum of 1 hour labor even though it was a mistake caused by
whichever Audi dealership sold/serviced the car in the first place and
didn't reset the cluster for a 5 cylinder engine.
