Slidin' Into Third [Gear]

Hello All,

Can anybody relate symptoms which would indicate that it's time to replace the motor mounts on my 84 4ksq?  I'm hoping beyond hope that the reason I can consistently cause third gear to grind when going up or down moderately steep inclines, but not level surfaces, has more to do with engine attitude than actually having third gear be bad.  How whimsical is my assessment?  (BTW, front and rear differntial mounts are only a few months old...good and solid). I've got a spare front diff down the cellar...I'd rather not have to think about replacing the old one before the snow flies.  Thoughts?  TIA
