5KTQ 17"rims with 35mm offset

OK heres a thought / question....
I am looking for new rims for my 5KTQ, knowing that they should be ET45 to
be the same as stock. If I were to go to 17 or 18" dia 7.5's or 8" wide
these are very hard to find in ET45, but are readilly available in ET 35.
I believe that in the rear an ofset of less than 45 would be preferable,
maybe 40 to try to clear the inner fender, and up front 40 or 45 is nice to
clear the strut.
so the question is ...Why dont I buy ET35 17x7.5 or 18x8 and then have some
alloy spacers made up to give me just the right offeset which may differ
front to back.
The I juts need to figure out if the bolts need to be longer, and if they
do I have to find some.
Has anyone out there done this?
Am I incorrect here with my offset assumptions?
Thanks
Haydn
