F'n OUTSTANDING!
Just one question. Is there a way to calculate your HP from that best run
using 30 degree ambient temps at sea level like a New England winter?
That 85 degree ambient has got to be hurting HP output even before heat
soaking of the engine bay.

Subject: 5KTQ 17"rims with 35mm offset
Date: Wed, 03 Sep 2003 17:38:41 -0400
OK heres a thought / question....
I am looking for new rims for my 5KTQ, knowing that they should be ET45 to
be the same as stock. If I were to go to 17 or 18" dia 7.5's or 8" wide
these are very hard to find in ET45, but are readilly available in ET 35.
I believe that in the rear an ofset of less than 45 would be preferable,
maybe 40 to try to clear the inner fender, and up front 40 or 45 is nice to
clear the strut.
so the question is ...Why dont I buy ET35 17x7.5 or 18x8 and then have some
alloy spacers made up to give me just the right offeset which may differ
front to back.
The I juts need to figure out if the bolts need to be longer, and if they
do I have to find some.
Has anyone out there done this?
Am I incorrect here with my offset assumptions?
Thanks
Haydn

Yea, you have it backwards, a 35 offset will make the
wheel stick out more. If you were to use the spacer
theory, you'd need like a 50 offset and a 5mm spacer
to get you back to 45.

Related to gunk in engine and hoping beyond hope:
5k km ago I changed the engine oil with synth (for the first time AFAIK).
The odo now is at 259k km, had the car since 117k. A very reliable source
(Stephane, the tech adventurer) tells me there's a smoke coming out of the
exhaust pipe. That was coasting down a mountain in 5th gear and throttle
shut. Compression will be measured soon. No oil leaks spoted. Oil usage
was 2 liters for the last almost 5K km, not much more than before. Used
left-over dyno juice to add though.
Question: Is there even a small chance that the change from dyno to synth
and subsequent mixing back with dyno has somehow caused the smoke? Maybe
valve seals?
Of course, the conspiracy theory would suggest that Stephane wants badly to
shove his surplus 1986 MC into my 1988 90 Q. Gotta build a real garage with
engine supporting roof beams
TIA, Tihol

Subject: gunk
I would avoid any anti-gunk products. I bought my very abused '87 5kcstq
w/118k mi. and simply "converted" it to Mobil 1. Regular Mobil 1 and filter
changes should be all it needs.
You could try using some Marvelous Mystery Oil in the crankcase for a few
hundred miles before the first oil change as well; that seems to be a
list-recommended gunk releaser.
You can also use Techron (from Chevron) every few tankfuls; or use Chevron's
premium gas.
My $.02.

Right thought wrong direction. The smaller the offset, the further out the
wheels will be. So up front a 35mm offset might be better, while the
rears might be 45 (I've seen Audi 5 spoke 17x8 wheels with a 48mm offset on
eBay - don't know what they came off of).
For my 5k I decided to play it safe and bought a set of A4 5 spoke 16x7's
(45mm). For the V8 I bought 17x8's (35mm). I haven't bought rubber yet
for the V8 wheels, so I haven't tried them on the 5k, but I don't imagine
they'll fit.
Some folks have mixed the 5 spoke 16x7's (37mm) from the A8 with the A4
wheels - A8's in front, A4's in back. Makes rotating the tires a little
tougher.
I've seen a nice 5k race car that had 17's, but the owner also flared at
the rear, not sure about the front.
Some people have tried cheap solutions like flaring the fenders with a
baseball bat (with bad results) - apparently it looks like the car was rear
ended. My thought (that I never tried) was to "pre-crease" the arch so it
doesn't pop out when rolling the bat under it. If my 5k were in good
condition, I would think seriously about it, but my car has a few wrinkles
- just never got around to trying it...

I had a similar problem on my V8 a while back, also couldn't get much
fluid flow out of the rears w/o pumping the brakes. Front/rear valve
was stuck; shop pushed it back w/ compressed air and all has been well
for ~20k mi.

I have one. $50 but you can get yours from Zelenda tools.com they are in
NY.
http://www.zelenda.com/ site off line.
try http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/repair.html#tools
Zelenda Tools in NY carries many of the VW/Audi Special tools required for
many repair jobs, call them and get their catalog ZELENDA 1-888-892-8348
YOU CAN NEVER OWN TOO MANY TOOLS!
It looks like I would need sort of an inside-out s=
ocket tool. Is this an Audi only tool, or are there any American cars that =
use this type of tool? Is there a name for it? Does it have a size for the =
socket? I would appreciate any sources or web links to buy the VAG tool

Could be motor mounts causing the problem. Look to see if your oil pan is
sitting on the subframe. This can cause a bad vibration in the car also.
Also,
in doing some investigating into the cause, you may want to disassemble your
shift linkage by removing the ashtray and boot and things. Clean out all
the
loose change, mints, shotgun shells (no, really, I found one down
there..)that
have fallen down there in the last 19 years. Lube everything up and see
what
happens.
