IMHO,
DSL is not worth it- I've had _tons_ of problems with DSL, living
less than 5000' from the CO and with two different services- the quality
of the wire in your home is critical- if you have old wiring, you will
have lots of headaches.
I live just under 18,000ft from the CO and use iDSL (expensive). It is far
more reliable than my cable connection, but not as fast.
Where I used to live (downtown Seattle) I had 384k sDSL, also extremely
reliable.
I run my home email and a couple of friends websites off my machines, so I
have to keep a reliable connection like DSL.
The sDSL was through "The River" (still in existence, but no longer local to
Seattle).
The iDSL is through Speakeasy (national, but still HQ in Seattle)
Given that it is cheaper than cable in your area I would say go for the DSL.
BTW: My wiring is ancient, this is a 95 year old home in an old section of
town.
