This is from my recollection (US market):

B chassis:

4000S: 85 and up MG engine (1.8 I4)
CGT: 87.5 and up NG engine (2.3 I5)
80/90: 88 and up 3A engine (2.0 I4)
80/90: 88 and up NG engine (2.3 I5)
90/CQ 20V: 90-91 7A engine (2.3 I5)
90 (B4 chassis): all (2.8 V6)
A4 (B5 chassis): all (1.8T I4, 2.8 V6, 3.0 V6)
A4 (B6 chassis): all (1.8T I4, 3.0 V6)

C chassis:

100, 5000S normally aspirated: 87 and up NF engine (2.3 I5)
5000S turbo: 84 and up KH engine (2.1 I5)
5000S turbo, 200: 86 and up MC engine (2.2 I5)
200 20V: 91 3B engine (2.3 I5)
urS4, urS6: all AAN engine (2.3 I5)
100, A6 (C4 chassis): all (2.8 V6)
A6 (C5 chassis) all (2.8V6, 3.0 V6)

D chassis:

V8: all (3.6 V8, 4.2 V8)
A8: all (3.7 V8, 4.2 V8)

Basically, a quick rule of thumb is that since model year 1984, all turbo
engines and all normally aspirated that that have 10:1 static compression
ratio or higher have knock sensors.
