Hi Chuck,
I recently did this on my 88 80q. I'm not sure how different an auto is to=
the q with reference to the starter. I'm assuming that the auto is an I5 =
like the q in which case things should be simliar.
You're right, it's a bit tricky to get at but still relatively simple. Ano=
ther bit of good news is that you don't have to remove anything except the =
front right tire. I think you need a 19mm socket with a "wobble" head and =
12" or 15" extension.
If I remember correctly, there are two bolts that hold the starter in place=
. The first one is easily seen and very accessible. Once you jack up the =
car, the starter can be seen on the right side of the car behind the compre=
ssor. The lower bolt can be removed easily. I forget which size sockets I=
used but they were in the 17mm to 19mm range. I also used open ended wren=
ches in 17mm to 19mm range. The bolts thread through to the back of the st=
arter. When you loosen the lower bolt from the fron, you also need to hold=
the nut at the back of the starter behind the transmission tunnel in place=
with another socket or wrench.
This one is the easy one. The top one is a little tricky. Once the top on=
e is loosened, you need to take the 19mm (or 17mm) socket, attach it to the=
"wobble". Place this on the top nut which is at the back of the starter a=
nd behind the transmission tunnel. Then, take the extension, thread it thr=
ough the right side past the axle shaft and place it on the socket. With t=
his held in place, you can now loosen the top bolt from the front. It take=
s a few attempts to get the socket and extension on, but once you get the i=
dea it's fairly straight forward.

Subject: 80 w/auto starter problem
I'm getting a pretty red 1988 Audi 80 with automatic ready for my little
sister. The starter needs to be replaced, and looking at it, or rather
trying to, I'm at a loss as to where to begin. I do have the Bently
manual, but it doesn't have any mention of how to access the starter.
The starter is above a motor mount, beneath the exhaust manifold and
heat shield, behind the AC compressor, and is almost totally concealed.
I'm wondering what I'll have to remove and how to go about this job.
I've never seen a starter built in so well.
My father told me to start at the left taillight. Chevy man. I didn't
reply.
TIA, Chuck Hill
