I had the same problem for several months. Frustrating as hell. I had the starter rebuilt at a reputable Auto Electric house only to have it continue. I took it back and they said they found a burnt winding or some such. Upon install it still failed when hot. I am refering to the original large diameter starter. It doesn't allow much airflow for cooling. I then replaced it with a smaller diameter unit from a later model (20 valve) and have not had a problem since. All of the above was with the original equipment heat sheild in place.
I also had no problem with a replacement from Checker other than it sounded like hell when it cranked, but it didn't heat soak.
