Can't remove outer CV-Joint

Big thanks to the listers who responded. I finally got off the joint by taking a large iron spike and pounding on the inner hub. I was skeptical about using anything other than copper or brass, but the CV-joint material is extremely hard. It took many hard hits to finally loosen, but there was no damage to the joint. Actually, the spike got dented pretty good from the experience. Anyway thanks again.

If you are sure the retaining ring is out of the way, it may just need more
thumping. I use an air chisel with a near flat end on it, much easier than
swinging a hammer under the car. I know there is some concern about not
using a brass drift but I have never damaged or noticed any damage.
I also don't have much luck with holding the snap ring apart, I just pull
the whole ring out and throw it away, new ones should come in the boot kit.
To get the ring out I cut off one of the tangs with a chisel, pry up the
remaining end and grab it with diagonal-cut pliers and pull.
Nick
