My cat in the '86 5ks did that. My aftermarket experience was not good.
First round was a "universal" fit unit with lots of parts. Never installed.
Second was a correct fitment part but with its own sheet metal heat shield.
After one year, sheet metal was vibrating. I went back to the original cat
with the "ball" punched out. Only half of mine was a problem. With only one
of the honeycomb parts in there, this car (140K miles) passes with 0.05% CO,
and 8 ppm HC. Idaho doesn't check NOx.
