1989 90Q Instrument Cluster goes dark....

Here's a weird one....

The instrument cluster went dark a few days ago.  Headlights on.  No dash
lights.  Popped the fuse.  It's OK.  Hmmm....  Got back in the car, put it
in reverse and the lights came back on.  Not in reverse = dark.  Reverse =
lights.

Can't seem to find the backup light switch and don't want to just short the
connection since that would leave the back-up lights on all the time.  :-O

Anybody run into this before?
