While working as an insurance appraiser, a Dodge truck was towed in to the
dealer. I don't remember why it was towed, but it was a manual trans and it
was towed with the rear wheels on the ground. The transmission was
destroyed. The dodge dealer started off by saying that the vehicle can't be
towed that way and the tow company would have to pay for the trans. When I
was able to get the owner to show that in his owners manual that it had been
towed within the limits set forth in the manual, the dealer said that the
manual was wrong and need to be corrected, but they paid for the new trans.
This is something that I was involved in, so it is certainly not urban
legend that the owners manual can set precidence.
