Yes, the a/c valve is similar to a tire valve.

No, you can't use your tire valve tool to replace the valve core without
venting the system (which is now bad, illegal, etc.).

which is likely the type of gizmo the a/c shop will have and charge you a few
bucks for using (hopefully less than the price of the tool, which you now
know).

I'm still not clear how the valve core comes all the way out into atmosphere
and gets replaced without losing any refrigerant at all, must be some wicked
good seals in there because that's what it says it does.
