Actually, for a mid engine rear drive setup I see no reason why the
transmission would have to be flopped. The engine would still be ahead
of the transaxle just like the donor car. Only the position of the
whole assembly would change relative to the passenger compartment.
This is a different scenario from the mid engine conversion of a drive
train from a rear engine vehicle. In that case the engine is going from
behind the axle to in front of it meaning that the assembly is oriented
180 deg from normal. In that case, unless something in the drive train
is swapped forward gear causes rearward motion.
